So, as the owner of Clean Living, professional carpet cleaners, I'm often asked "How do I clean my own carpet"?
The simple answer is, you don't; call in the professionals. I had a friend for whom I was doing some work, not at all related to carpet cleaning but, because of my business, the subject came up in conversation. She had recently had one of her carpets cleaned by a generic cleaner - you know the sort of business, offers; windows, gutters, jet washing, conservatories etc. etc. and 'oh yes, of course I do carpets'!
He hadn't had the right equipment (he turned up with a 'Rug Doctor' {snort, spit!!!} nor any formal training, which is often the case - unfortunatley :-(
In her own words "The carpets took about 3 days to dry out enough that the room could be used, and the smell of wet carpet lingered in the house for weeks"
In brief, do not try this at home, check out the credentials of the company you are tempted to use (Google and Facebook ratings are a good guide) and try not to be 'price driven' and opt for the cheapest option. You only do this occasionally so make sure you are doing it right, not twice!
