Yes, I agree that fitting new carpets is something we all balk at, as the cost is prohibitive but much can be said for 'do the job right and do it once' or, conversely, 'do it cheaply and do it twice'!
This became very apparent recently when I went to an old converted barn, and lovely it was too! In the property were 20-year old carpets which the owners thought were "beyond help"; the expression I think they used?
